Hinduism is a complex canvas of history, interpretations, narratives, lores, and occasionally fables. As a culture it is a rich tapestry of human values, science, triumphs, and celebrations. There are repeated cycle of death, decay, and rejuvenation of morals, mortals, and immortals. For eons, it has been a religion to some, and philosophy to others. Then there are those who question the very term “Hindu” and its validity. Just when you think you have developed some familiarity with Hinduism, you get hit by yet another reinterpretation not just a few miles down the road, but sometimes within the same four walls of a household.
Hinduism is difficult to summarize. It can only be experienced in witnessing the traditions, practices, debates, and diatribes. The freedom, simplicity of thought, and limitless possibilities that a Hindu is willing to experiment with is its uniqueness. For that reason, in my opinion, everybody is born a “Hindu”; a free and curious human being.
हिंदू धर्म इतिहास, व्याख्याओं, कथाओं, किस्सों और कुछ बार कहानियों का एक जटिल ढेर प्रतीत होता है। संस्कृति के रूप में यह मानव मूल्यों, विज्ञान, विजयों और उत्सवों का एक समृद्ध जाल है। इसमें नैतिकता, अनैतिकता, मनुष्यों और अमरों के पुनरुत्थान के लगातार चक्र हैं। अगर युगों से यह किसी के लिए धर्म रहा है, तो किसी के लिए दर्शन। फिर वहाँ ऐसे लोग भी हैं जो “हिंदू” शब्द और उसकी वैधता पर प्रश्न उठाते हैं। और जैसे ही आप हिंदू धर्म के साथ कुछ परिचित होने लगते है, तो आपको एक और पुनर्व्याख्या का सामना करना पड़ सकता है, न केवल कुछ मील दूर, बल्कि कभी-कभी अपने ही घर की चार दीवारों के भीतर।
हिंदू धर्म का संक्षेप में व्याख्यान करना, या उसको सारांश देना बहुत कठिन है। इसे परम्पराओं, अभ्यासों, व्यवहारों, विवादों और टिप्पणियों के माध्यम से ही अनुभव किया जा सकता है। हिंदू धर्म की विशिष्टता उसकी अंतर्निहित वैचारिक स्वतंत्रता और सरलता, और उसमें सन्निहित दार्शनिक प्रयोग की असीमित संभावना है। इस कारण से, मेरी राय में, हर कोई “हिंदू” पैदा होता है; एक स्वतंत्र और जिज्ञासु इंसान।

Great summary. Yes, I am a Hindu and happy to be one. I like Hinduism because it offers me lots of liberty and freedom. I can focus on that formless One Ultimate (God) during my meditation or use any number of forms as Devatas (gods) to pray. I am not bound to follow strict doctrines, but our scriptures provide me with a very high-level guidance to live a good Dharmic life. Hinduism is not a human centric religion; we are taught to respect animals, mother earth, Sun, Moon and more. The best part of Hinduism is—we believe all religions are valid—a true pluralistic religion.
On your statement, “Hinduism is a complex”, I do not see any issue with Hinduism being complex explaining to others. If I use an analogy, democracy is always difficult to understand with so many protests and citizens burning the national flag. Compared to that, Saudi dictatorship and Chinese communist system are very easy to understand–there is only one way–put up or shut up. I rather opt for the freedom.
